This is the worst thing we’ve heard in a very long time.
Marie Trainer awake up in research hospitals with her legs and hands removed — and in a cruel twisting, was told her beloved dogs were to blame.
It all began when Marie and her husband Matthew returned home to Ohio from a vacation to the Caribbean.
For many tourists this year, trips to that region have turned fatal — but for the trainers, the nightmare began after they got back.
What happened? The same thing that always happens when dog owners get home. Mary told Cleveland’s Fox 8 😛 TAGEND
” My dog licked me … my dogs lick me all the time .”
That’s all it took.
Shortly afterward Marie fell ill, at first presenting with flu-like symptoms. However, when her temperature dropped to 93 degrees, her family knew this was a lot more serious.
The team at Aultman Hospital attempted to halt the progress, but it was going too fast; Marie developed sepsis and had to be put into a medically induced coma.
Marie’s stepdaughter Gina Premier is a nurse practitioner at the local hospital and was able to help shed more light on what happened next 😛 TAGEND
” We were getting new symptoms and worsening symptoms very rapidly .”
Marie’s extremities began to turn necrotic and then gangrene. Doctors had to remove her legs and hands in order to save her life. Gina explains the necrosis was moving so quickly” there was nothing we are to be able to do .”
Blood exams corroborated Marie had contracted capnocytophaga , a bacteria found in the mouths of many puppies and some cats, though it doesn’t make them sick.
Dr. Margaret Kobe , the Medical Director of Infectious Disease at Aultman Hospital, explains 😛 TAGEND
” Fairly common in the oral vegetation or the mouth of a dog and it can be transmitted through a bite or sometimes simply contact with saliva. That organism is very virulent. It has the ability to induce your immune system to do some pretty horrible things .”
The bacteria can turn the human immune system against itself, causing blood clots which can lead to necrosis and gangrene.
The Trainers believe one of the dogs must have licked a small scrape on Marie’s arm.
It’s rare, but humans do occasionally react this way to the bacteria, and it isn’t fairly. The same thing happened to a man last August, and he had to undergo a similar quadruple amputation.
When she finally woke up from the coma, Marie had no idea what had happened. We can’t imagine what that must have been like!
Marie has expended 80 days in the hospital and undergone eight operations. She says her husband Matthew has helped her get through all of this 😛 TAGEND
” He’s here every day for me .., every day he feeds me, and garbs me here every day .”
Together, they’ve launched a GoFundMe page to be included in” medical expenditures, equipment, transportation” — Marie will need prosthetic legs and months of physical therapy.
BTW, she and Matthew don’t blame the dogs and will NOT be getting rid of them.

” If you get bit by a dog you definitely need to go on antibiotics and to wash your hands when playing with a puppy, especially with an open cut .”
Also, if you consider ANY signs of infection after interaction with a pet and an open meander, seek medical attention immediately !
