Too many people reach for sleeping pill or an over-the-counter sleep aid without even considering what they are sleeping on , she said.

One study published in Applied Ergonomics found that new bedding systems improved measures designed to ache, stiffness, sleep convenience and quality across the board in a group of 62 men and women compared with their old beds, which on average were more than nine years old.

1. Know when it’s time.

But the good news is that new bedding technologies and materials entails mattresses have come a long way, and there really is a mattress out there for everyone, Cralle said. “Just remember : The mattress that your neighbour raves about may not be the mattress you rave about . “

3. Make sure to pick the right mattress for you — not the fanciest, most-hyped one.

Lay on it for at least 15 minutes in the store, or longer if you can, and be sure to lay in the position you sleep in, Cralle advised. Also try changing stances — is it easy to roll over and change positions? Is it easy to sit up and get out of bed?

And be sure you’re trying it out with a pillow — either bring your own, or ask to try one in the store that is similar to yours.

Pillow top fans rest easy: A firmer mattress is not always better, Cralle said. “People always tell me they hear that, but that is not always the case and not a hard and fast rule.”
